The Waitakere Ranges are criss-crossed by a network of more than 140 tracks that cover a range of habitats from lush native rainforests and scenic coastlines to rocky shores and windswept black-sand beaches. Some are gravel paths or even private roads – others are very basic tramping tracks. Many cross or intersect, giving the flexibility to plan a walk to match your available time, level of experience and stamina.
Best known is the Hillary Trail, a self-guided 77km four or five-day tramp through lush native forest and along the wild coast of the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park. Named after Sir Edmund Hillary, New Zealand’s favorite and most famous mountaineer and explorer, this magnificent hike captures his intrepid spirit and sense of adventure. It connects a network of regional park tracks and takes trampers through a hiker’s paradise with its pristine native bush, plants, wildlife and magnificent scenery and views.
