Accommodation

Your first night with Awesome Walks will be spent at Wharerangi, our base in the Waitakeres. Here you’ll stay in one of our well-appointed bush cabins or your own personal caravan before hitting the trail the next day.

Bedding arrangements in the cabins or caravans are flexible, making Awesome Walks perfect for families, couples or groups holidaying together.

Wharerangi

Wharerangi, meaning “house in the sky” in Maori, is a slice of kiwi paradise an easy 50-minute drive from Auckland city.

Our guest accommodation is set in a private bushland retreat and exudes a warm welcome to city-weary folk. Here is where you’ll spend the first night of your adventure.

Surrounded by nature, you’ll see native birds like tomtits, tui, grey warbler and native pigeon dart about in the early evening. A pretty stream meanders through the bush nearby. At night you’ll hear the sound of water trickling over the rocks and the morepork calling from the treetops.

Caravans

The Awesome Walks caravans are all the iconic Liteweight brand, a Kiwi original manufactured from the 1940’s to the 80’s.  True to their slogan “A great indoors for the great outdoors”, they are fully self-contained and have been beautifully refurbished and well appointed so that you can experience the best of New Zealand’s natural beauty in comfort and style.

Wharekai

A short walk through the tall native bush connects the guest accommodation with the kitchen, dining and lounging area and the outdoor deck with its spectacular panoramic views.  The atmosphere in this communal area is relaxed and informal – you can connect over a board game, explore the nearby rocky stream, enjoy pre-dinner drinks or simply sit back and gaze through the canopy of trees to the view in the distance or the sparkling night sky above.

Guests are joined by their hosts or local rangers each evening to chat about the next day’s walk, the route and what to look out for along the way.  Shared stories and lots of lively, convivial conversation with fellow adventurers is often the catalyst for long-term friendships.

Afternoon tea and dinner will be here for you when you arrive.  You will enjoy a continental breakfast here in the morning and find an array of delicious choices from which to craft your packed lunch.

The Liteweight Caravan Story

The Liteweight story began in 1946 when Tek Jessen became interested in caravans as a way of holidaying in New Zealand, then decided to build one for himself and his family.

From humble beginnings Liteweight Caravans grew to become an iconic New Zealand brand and for over four decades led the country, and at times the world, in technical design and innovation.  During its 44 years in business, Liteweight produced nearly 15000 caravans, more than any other caravan manufacturer in New Zealand.  Today, more than 25 years since the factory closed, the majority of the caravans are still in use.
